Core Physical Education Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
Core Physical Education at Bishop Walsh Catholic School aims to provide a curriculum which is centred on developing pupils’ knowledge and skills necessary for the development of their physical, social and emotional wellbeing now and in their future. Pupils are given opportunities to develop competencies to excel in a broad and balanced range of physical activities. In lessons, pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sporting activities, as well as provided with a provision to lead healthy and active lifestyles in and outside of Bishop Walsh Catholic School.

Skills Entitlement:

Bishop Walsh Catholic School Physical Education department aims to ensure that all pupils develop the skills to:

  • Physical development: Develop physical competence in a broad and balanced range of physical activities

  • Thinking development: Build a strong knowledge and understanding of the rules, strategies and tactics and key terminology within a broad and balanced range of physical activities.

  • Social development: Become socially proficient to purposefully engage in physical education through feedback, officiating and leading others.

Examination Physical Education Intent (KS4)

Examination Physical Education seeks to develop a deep theoretical knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts that underpin physical activity and sport. Examination study in physical education is broad, coherent and practically applied. We seek to encourage pupils to be inspired, motivated and challenged, allowing pupils to make informed decisions and further learning opportunities and career pathways within physical education and sport.

Skills Entitlement GCSE Physical Education:

  • Understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport.

  • Recognise key socio-cultural influences which can affect a persons involvement in physical activity and sport.

  • Develop pupils’ skills and techniques while selecting and using tactics, strategies to perform effectively in different physical activities.

  • Critically analyse and evaluate physical performance to improve performance levels in their sport.

    Skills Entitlement: Cambridge National Level 2 in Sports Science

  • Understanding how we can reduce the risk of sports injuries and dealing with common medical conditions.

  • Pupils will gain a deep knowledge of how to recognise and respond to common injuries that may occur during physical activity or sports.

  • Being able to design, plan and evaluate fitness training programme.

  • Consider the composition of healthy, balanced nutrition and understand its affect and impact on our performance in physical activity and sport.
