Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
An overview of the topics and themes covered at KS4.Students will consider the practical application of business concepts. The course provides opportunities to explore theories and concepts in a contemporary and relevant way, through the context of events in the business and economic world. The knowledge and skills gained from this course will provide students with a firm foundation for further study in a range of different areas.

Skills Entitlement:

  • Know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society.

  • Apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts.

  • Develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen, and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems.

  • Develop as effective and independent students, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.

  • Use an enquiring, critical approach to make informed judgements.

  • Investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth and understanding of business.

  • Develop and apply quantitative skills relevant to business, including using and interpreting data.

Cross-Curricular Themes:

  • Maths: numeracy skills, calculations of percentage changes, notions of correlation, cause and effect and confidence can give rise to useful discussion of economic and business data with those who have studied statistics.

  • Psychology: motivation theorists and research methods. 

  • Physical Education - links between motivation, training and performance.

  • English - We encourage students to use connecting phrases like ‘so that’, in ‘order to’ and so on to build analysis and application in their examination responses.

  • Design Technology - students are familiar with CAD/CAM (and with different methods of production. They also study quality management.

  • Geography – globalization, locational decisions.

  • RE – ethics and legal aspects to recruitment.

Unit 1 – Business in the Real World - The purpose of business activity, the role of business enterprise and entrepreneurship, and the dynamic nature of business.

Unit 5 – Marketing - The purpose of marketing, its role within business and how it influences business activity.

Unit 3 – Business Operations - What business operations involve, their role within the production of goods and the provision of services, and how they influence business activity.

Unit 4 – Human Resources - The purpose of human resources, its role within business and how it influences business activity.

Year 11

Unit 4 – Human Resources (Continued and completed)

Unit 2 – Influences on Business - The importance of external influences on business and how businesses change in response to these influences.

Unit 6 – Finance - The purpose of the finance function, its role within business and how it influences business activity.

Revision - A focus on the key topics within each of the six units alongside specific exam-based skill development.
