KS3

Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
An overview of the topics and themes covered at KS3.

Art and Design in Key Stage 3 at Bishop Walsh offers pupils a wide range of experiences in a number of different disciplines within the Art and Design field. Projects are centred around the pupils gaining material handling skills and carrying out contextual research around their subject. Pupils will work individually and as part of small groups to explore materials and techniques while creating imaginative pieces of Art work. 

Aims:
The curriculum for Art and Design at Bishop Walsh aims to ensure that all pupils: 

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences 

  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques 

  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design know about artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Skills Entitlement:
The skills you aspire to ensure pupils will be proficient in by the end of Key Stage 3.

  • Pencil drawings- observational studies

  • Pen work- mark making

  • Painting using acrylic and watercolour paint

  • 3D sculpture

  • Printing

  • Hand stitching

  • Weaving

  • Design processes and making

KS4

Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
An overview of the topics and themes covered at KS4.

When opting for GCSE level Art and Design at Bishop Walsh pupils will be completing an OCR (Exam Board) course which allows pupils the freedom to develop and explore their own practice as young artists. Each pupil is required to produce a Coursework Portfolio worth 60% of their final grade and an Externally Set Task which is worth 40% of their final grade.

 Aims:
The course is designed to encourage pupils to develop knowledge, skills, and understanding along with creativity and imagination. Pupils show this through their responses to a range of stimuli. Pupils will:

  • actively engage in the creative process of art, craft and design in order to develop as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds

  • develop critical understanding through investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills

  • acquire and develop technical skills through working with a broad range of media, materials, techniques, processes and technologies with purpose and intent

  • develop knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures

Skills Entitlement:
While completing an Art and Design GCSE pupils will have the opportunity to work within a number of disciplines including:

  • Fine Art (Entry Level Certificate (ELC) and GCSE Fine Art)

  • Drawing  

  • Mixed-media 

  • Printing 

  • Painting

Work is not limited to one area of study and pupils are encouraged to develop their own pathways through their Coursework Portfolios.
