KS3

Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
At Key Stage 3, Dance is a subject that operates within the Performing Arts Faculty. Students study dance topics including, Martial Arts, Thematic based concepts and Physical Theatre. In Dance lessons students develop choreographic, performance and dance appreciation skills through their practical class work. Students also learn how to be creative thinkers and effective collaborators.

Skills Entitlement:
Choreography:

  • The 4 pillars of dance; action, space, dynamics and relationships.

  • The understanding and effective use of choreographic devices and dance relationships within choreography.

  • How to create and structure choreography.

  • Working from a stimulus

  • Using theme in dance

Performance:

  • The application of mental, physical and expressive skills, within performance.

  • How to communicate a theme, mood, choreographic intent and stimulus through a performance.

Appreciation:

  • Develop verbal analytical skills.

  • Analytical self and peer feedback.

KS4

Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
The study of GCSE Dance aims to equip our pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to understand the importance of and application of: Performance skills, how to choreograph and develop movement, physical and technical skills and critical engagement through the study of six professional dance works. 

Pupils will demonstrate how to make connections between theory and practical so that the pupils are able to apply their understanding of physical skills and development of movement to practical dance.

The subject aims to encourage pupils to develop strong practical skills and techniques giving them the ability, expertise and confidence to create dance, perform dance and understand dance. The study of the professional works will develop students’ ability to critically appraise dances of different styles and cultural influences, providing a springboard for engaging practical tasks.

Skills Entitlement:
The GCSE Dance course encourages pupils to:

  • Provide pupils with knowledge, understanding and skills for performance. 

  • Understand the importance of physical skills, technical skills, expressive skills, mental skills, safe practice and the processes of creating safe and prepared movement. 

  • Provide pupils with knowledge, understanding and skills for choreography. 

  • Understand the importance of action, dynamic, spatial and relationship content. The choreographic processing’s, such as structuring and form. And the use of choreographic devices. Aural setting and how they affect choreographic outcomes, different performance settings and communication of choreographic intent. 

  • Knowledge and understanding of the critical appreciation of their own work. 

  • The meaning of relevant performance and terminology. The contribution of performance to the audience understanding the choreographic intent of the work being performed.

  • The meaning of relevant choreography terminology. The contribution of choreography to audiences understanding of the choreographic intent. 

  • Knowledge and understanding for critical appreciation of professional set works. The features of production, different performance environments, different choreographic approaches, choreographic content and choreographic intention.
