Course Entry Requirements:

A grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics

Course Content

The content of this qualification is mainly drawn from a range of GCSE Maths content areas together with an additional 20% of new material beyond GCSE. The emphasis is on applying these skills in context.

General Course Description

‘It is essential that students keep up their maths skills but clearly A-level and AS-level mathematics aren’t for everybody. Core Maths gives students the opportunity to maintain and develop everyday maths skills that will be really useful to them both at university and when they start work.’

Core Maths is a fairly new course for those who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but are not planning to take AS or A-level mathematics. At the end of the one-year course, you will come out with a level 3 qualification – with equivalent UCAS to an AS level.

The skills developed in the study of mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Maths will help you keep up these essential skills. Many students arrive at university with unrealistic expectations of the mathematical and statistical demands of their subjects. Lack of confidence and anxiety about Mathematics/Statistics are problems for many students. Core Maths has been specially designed to help pupils prepare for further study and careers in areas such as geography, business, marketing, computing, nursing or manufacturing. Students who study maths after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning potential.
