Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
The course in child development covers all aspects of child development and parental responsibility, from conception to five years. The pupils will develop the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being.

Skills Entitlement:
The study of three mandatory topics (health and well-being for child development, create a safe environment and understand the nutritional needs of children from birth to five years and understand the development of a child from one to five years) enables pupils to develop:

The essential knowledge and understanding of the  importance of pre-conception health and reproduction, antenatal care and preparation for birth. They will also learn about postnatal care and the conditions in which a child can thrive. 

Topics include: 

  • Pre-conception health and reproduction 

  • Antenatal care and preparation for birth

  •  Postnatal checks, postnatal care and the conditions for development 

  • Childhood illnesses and a child safe environment.

Knowledge of how to create a safe environment for children from birth to five years in childcare settings. They will research and choose equipment that is suitable and safe for use and will learn about children’s nutrition and dietary needs.

Topics include: 

  • Creating a safe environment in a childcare setting 

  • Choosing suitable equipment for a childcare setting 

  • Nutritional needs of children from birth to five years.

Knowledge of the physical, intellectual and social developmental norms for children from one to five years. They willl understand the importance of creating plans and providing different play activities to support children in their development.

Topics include: 

  • Physical, intellectual and social developmental norms from one to five years 

  • Stages and types of play and how play benefits development 

  • Observe the development of a child aged one to five years 

  • Plan and evaluate play activities for a child aged one to five years for a chosen area of development.

Term 1: Key factors when choosing equipment for babies from birth to 12 months (LO1)

Term 2: Key factors when choosing equipment for children from one to five years (LO2)

Term 3: The nutritional guidelines and requirements for children from birth to five years (LO3)

Term 4: Investigate and develop feeding solutions for children from birth to five years (LO4)

Term 5: Consolidate Unit RO19 LO1-LO4

Term 6: The physical, intellectual and social developmental norms from birth to five years (LO1)

Year 10

Term 1: The benefits of learning through play (LO2)

Term 2: Plan different play activities for a chosen developmental area with a child from birth to five years (LO3)

Term 3: Carry out and evaluate different play activities for a chosen developmental area with a child from birth to five years (LO4)

Term 4: Consolidate Unit RO20 LO1-LO4

Term 5: Child safety.

Term 6: Recognise, manage and prevent childhood illnesses. Postnatal checks.

Year 11

Term 1: Postnatal provision and conditions for development.

Term 2: Reproduction and roles and responsibilities of parenthood.

Term 3: Antenatal care and preparation for birth
