Course Entry Requirements:

Four GCSEs at grade 4 and above

General Course Description:

The subject examines participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. Students will complete 180 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) each year. After year 12, students will have completed the ‘Certificate’. After Year 13, students will have completed the ‘Extended Certificate’.

Content:

  • Year 12 – Certificate:

    1. Body systems and the effects of physical activity (90 GLH)

    Assessment: External Assessment - 1 hour 30 minutes - 70 marks - 50%

    2.  Sports coaching and leadership (90GLH)

    Assessment: Centre Assessed Unit - 50%

  • Year 13 – Extended Certificate:

     1. Sports Organisation and Development (60 GLH)

    Assessment: External Assessment - 1 hour - 60 marks - 33%

    2.  Performance Analysis in Sport and Exercise (60 GLH) * Assessment: Centre Assessed Unit - 33%

    3.  Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation (60 GLH) *

    Assessment: Centre Assessed Unit - 33%

* In year 13, the modules marked with an asterix are optional modules and can change from year to year depending on the cohort. Each module however is worth the same number of marks.

 

Career Pathways:

University/College courses including Sports and Exercise Science, Sports Studies, Sports Management, Physiotherapy, Sports Coaching and Teaching, Leisure and Tourism. Teaching qualifications in Physical Education. Furthermore, A-Level can lead in to careers such as Sports scientist, PE teacher, Physiotherapist. Professional sportsperson, Sports coach/consultant, Sports policy at local and national level, Diet and fitness instructor or Personal trainer.
